When it comes to mowing our lawns we want to stay at the correct height. This is for a couple of reasons. Those reasons are due to "Stress" and promoting good "Growth" of the grass on your lawn. The ideal height of your grass should be 3 3/4 inches tall before cutting. The blades of grass is what we cut when cutting our lawns. In no way do we want to damage the grass and only leave a stem. By leaving only a stem your grass can start to die or turn brown leaving your lawn looking unhealthy. The blades are what they use to breath allowing photosynthesis. In simple terms they are what takes in energy from the sun as well as moisture for them to drink. If you were to only leave a stem this process would slow down or no longer be able to happen which would cause it to die. With that being said, when your lawn reaches 3 2/3 in height you should only cut it down to 2 1/2 inches after each time you mow. By following this rule of thumb you will stimulate the grass to grow strong and healthy. That means a heathier green and even growth throughout. A step to eliminate the guessing process of how tall your grass needs to be before cutting is to mark your lawnmower(marker) showing you the correct height that the grass should be. The second mark should be below that to help prevent you from cutting your lawn to low. You don't want your lawn to be to high before cutting since this can cause damage and unwanted stress that could have the same affects as cutting to low. No one lawn is the same nor do we all have the same grass type filling them out. So above is a diagram showing you the type of grass you have, the correct height when wanting to cut your lawn, and the correct height each type of lawn should be after you cut. "Mowers, Start your engines". Happy cutting.
